Galleries and Shopping

The Franschhoek Local Market is open every Saturday from 9 am to 3 pm with live music, arts, crafts, gifts and a great food and drink offering. It offers great fun and a wonderful atmosphere.

The main road, Huguenot Street, has very many lovely boutiques and galleries. Here are some of our favorites;

Is Art
A vibrant gallery with a wonderful collection of local contemporary art and antiques. Centrally located in the middle of town.

Galleria Gibello
Franschhoek’s original brandy distillery, Galleria Gibello, is the new home to wild-life photographer Caroline Gibello's iconic images of Africa.

The Holden Manz Art Gallery
This gallery is right in the middle of town and hosts a wonderful collection of contemporary African art.

Ebony Curated
The Ebony gallery specialises in paintings, sculptures, furniture, handcrafted homeware and local artefacts. The dark walls and warm lighting allow each art piece shine on its own, and the soft and stylish furniture calls on visitors to be taken home.

Other Activities

Franschhoek is a great base for tours and activities across the winelands including Paarl and Stellenbosch. For our more active visitors there is a wonderful choice of hikes, bike tours, kayaking, quad-biking, horseback riding and golf.

Please ask Guest Services for more information.

Wines, Vineyards and Tastings

There are literally too many to mention, and no two people can agree which are the best vineyards to visit while in Franschhoek. Of course, for an overview of very many of the main vineyards, the Franschhoek tram is a great option, and tickets can be booked at the Front Desk for you.
Here are some of our personal favourites, chosen by category of wine or grape; .

La Motte
Located just outside the town. A beautiful old estate with a selection of different grape varietals, but their Chardonnay has been winning awards for years, and is really good. The tasting room is opened from 9 am to 5 pm. It closes for a few days over Christmas.

Haute Cabrière
This is home to the well-known and delicious Pierre Jourdan sparkling wine range. Sit outside with breath-taking views of the valley and enjoy the sparkles. Seasonal offers, such as oysters are always popular.

Rupert and Rothschild
This tasting room is completely unique, not just in Franschhoek, but probably worldwide. The tasting room is on this very impressive vineyard made up of a partnership between two families; the Ruperts and the Rothschilds. In addition to offering their estate wines, they also include tasting from Rothschild vineyards in New Zealand, Argentina and France. This allows the taster to really experience how wine lives and grows differently in different climates and locations.

Mȏreson
A wonderful farm full of citrus and vines and personality. Many of the wine names cutely names after their dog’s behaviour! Their wine makes is, justly in our view, award winning and well recognized. They offer a tasting with charcutier option, or even better join them at Bread and Wine for lunch.

La Bri
This little boutique private farm is one of the original nine farms allocated to the Huguenots on their arrival in Franschhoek Valley in 1694. The farm borders have remained unchanged but it has been through five families before being bought by Robin Hamilton in 1997. This farm offers two wine ranges, one range of estate wines, and one range from neighboring farms. Wine pairing with biltong, chocolate and Turkish delight are also available.

Eating Out

Franschhoek is undeniably the Gourmet Capital of South Africa, so, it should be no surprise that we are spoilt for choice with a fantastic food offering in the village and beyond.

The following restaurants are really very good. They get busy, so why not ask us to book for you before you arrive in the town.

Foliage
One of Eat Out's top 20 in 2017, this restaurant goes from strength to strength. Excellent in every way, but not overly fussy or formal.

Reubens
Now in a new and much improved location, Rueben has a passion for creating fine yet uncomplicated cuisine in a laid back and stylish setting to match.

Marigold
This North Indian inspired restaurant has been a revolutionary addition to the choice of restaurants in Franschhoek. The menu, exotic and aromatic, offers a wonderful variety which has made it a popular choice for visitors.

La Petite Colombe
This is a relative newcomer to Franschhoek and the little brother of the famed Constantia "La Colombe". It has been immediately recognised for its excellence and it very worthwhile a visit.

Le Coin Francais
Well know chef Darren Badenhorst opened this restaurant relatively recently and has made a real impact with his own twist on nostalgic foods from our memories.

Chefs Warehouse
Irish chef Liam Tomlin has been taking the Peninsula by storm for years, and his recent portfolio addition in Franschoek in another resounding success. Here, it is all about the food; the sheer pleasure of taste in tapas format.

Getting Around in Franschhoek

Franschhoek is small and very easy to get around. The town itself is made up on a single main road with tributary roads off it. In and around the greater Franschhoek area, the roads are good and well signposted.

We have a private tour and transfer company available to our guests. Their services include airport transfers, tours across the peninsula, and in the winelands, and short distance transfers. This is an easy and popular solution to your transport needs whilst staying at our hotels.

There is little in the form of public transport, but many other options are available. Please speak with the guest service team for more information.

Taxis: reliable taxis can be ordered at reception.
Tuk Tuk: These three-wheel taxis are a new and very popular attraction to Franschhoek. They do need to be booked in advance so please speak with a team member for help with this.
Wine Tram:This hop-on hop-off experience can bring you to very many of the well-known vineyards and wineries in and around town. These tickets are available at reception.
